Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Stroop Effect?

The Stroop Effect is a well-established phenomenon in cognitive psychology: when the ink color of a color word mismatches the word itself (e.g. the word “RED” printed in blue ink), it takes measurably longer to name the ink color. Your brain’s automatic reading response interferes with the color-naming task. EaseStroop uses this to measure your attentional control and processing speed.

How do I start a session?

Tap Start Session on the Home tab. Choose your difficulty and trial type on the pre-session screen, then tap Go. You can also enable a warm-up round of 5 unscored practice trials in Settings → Skip warm-up.

What is the Stroop Score?

The Stroop Score is a single number combining your median reaction time and accuracy:

StroopScore = (1000 / medianRT_ms) × (correct / total)² × 100

A higher score means faster and more accurate responses. A score above 60 on Interference at Standard difficulty is a solid baseline.

What are the difficulty levels?

  • Beginner — 20 trials, 4 colors, no time limit. Interference trial type only.
  • Standard — 40 trials, 6 colors, 3 seconds per trial. All three classic trial types.
  • Expert — 60 trials, 8 colors, 1.5 seconds per trial. All four trial types including Reverse. Pro only.

What are the trial types?

  • Word — Read the color word (baseline reading speed).
  • Color — Name the color of a colored rectangle (baseline color-naming speed).
  • Interference — Name the ink color of a mismatched color word. This is the classic Stroop condition and the primary metric.
  • Reverse — Say the word while ignoring the ink color. Expert / Pro only.

What does EaseStroop Pro include?

A one-time $4.99 purchase that unlocks:

  • Expert difficulty and Reverse trial type
  • Full session history with search and filter
  • 30-day sparkline and trial-type breakdown charts
  • Interference Index analytics
  • 6 Pro themes
  • iCloud Sync across your devices

Restore it anytime with Restore Purchases on the upgrade screen.

How do I turn on Color-blind mode?

Go to Settings → Accessibility → Color-blind mode. The stimulus card and response buttons will show a distinct geometric shape alongside each color, so the task doesn’t rely solely on color perception. Color-blind mode is always free.

Will my progress sync across devices?

If you have Pro, you can enable iCloud Sync in Settings. Your sessions, achievements, and preferences will sync privately through your own iCloud account.
